From the Desk of Jon Gasperini

It’s always an exciting time of the year

in a printing business as Graph Expo, North America’s largest printing fair, approaches. As an exhibitor, we not only have machines to get ready and travel arrangements to coordinate, this year we also have a ton of new developments and news to get out there!

Graph Expo - Sept. 13-16 Chicago, IL - graphexpo.comWe are very excited to kick off our cooperation with Vivid Laminating at the show and introduce our customers to these high quality, low maintenance laminators that already enjoy a large following in Europe. They are the number one selling laminator in Europe and our goal is to make them number one in the USA! With our new sales & service manager for laminating systems, Scott Diamond heading up the effort, we are already on our way to success, which means more profits for our customers.

We are also very pleased to welcome back Michael Schubert, Managing Director of Renz to our stand. Michael will be on hand to personally discuss the exciting innovations in punching and binding that will be unveiled by Renz at Drupa, only less than a year away already!

Stago Stapling Machines, Paper Drilling Machines, Round Cornering Machines, Paper JoggersIn keeping with our philosophy of adding high quality, European design and manufacturing solutions, we are also taking the opportunity at Graph Expo to introduce a new partnership with Stago in Germany. Stago designs and manufactures high quality, precision stapling machines and other critical ancillary finishing equipment such as round cornering machines and joggers. Michael Kreutle of Stago will be on hand to discuss the advantages of their machines to all of our clients looking for something new and quality!

Innovations, Automations and the Drive for Continuous Improvement!

Bright Idea

One thing for certain in todays printing industry is that those printers who have embraced technology and are constantly on the lookout to improve their processes, bring finishing functions in house, and look at themselves as marketing solution providers are flourishing. Those that fall into the “we’ve always done it this way and it’s been good enough” are often struggling or worse.

I think the idea of moving into new areas and adding labor savers is more intimidating for some than it should be. Digital print engine manufacturers offer all kinds of support, training and paths to fill capacity, after all it is in their best interest that the printer is literally clicking away! On the finishing side many manufacturers have experts whose only job is to make sure their customers are successful with new capabilities.

The key to success when considering taking the plunge into new technologies is to ask for help and take advantage of these resources.

At DataBind for example, our team of professionals will only make the recommendations that are appropriate for the stage and volume of your business. For some that means subtle improvements and for some it may mean stepping up to full automation. It will surprise some that in many cases, by investing in equipment a company can actually put immediate dollars in their pocket after calculating labor savings.

So as you tour the stands at Graph Expo, remember to take a few extra minutes to talk to an expert, it may be the exact advice you need to become more profitable!

Question

“How do I calculate the wire and hanger requirement for thumb cut style calendars?
-Maria L., St. Louis, MO

Answer

Great question Maria! Thumb cut calendars are not as intimidating as they seem. Just calculate the loops for a straight bind and minus 3 loops for the thumb cut. If this is an odd number, then minus another loop to make it even number and divide by two for the two sections (one on each side of the thumb cut) and done! The hanger should be from half the length of the bound edge up to three quarters of the length. Just don’t forget to order 2 pieces of Ring Wire for each calendar!
